Earth Day is a time to reflect on our responsibility to care for the planet, and the members of the World Mission Society Church of God in Maryland turned reflection into action. On April 22, approximately fifty volunteers gathered at Seneca Creek State Park to participate in a large-scale cleanup. Equipped with gloves, boots, tools, and safety vests, the volunteers split into teams and worked diligently to restore the park’s natural beauty.
Beautifying Seneca Creek State Park
Seneca Creek State Park is a beloved destination in Montgomery County, Maryland, spanning more than 6,300 acres along a 14-mile stretch of Seneca Creek. Visitors enjoy fishing, hiking, and biking, but like many public spaces, the park faces challenges with litter and invasive plants. Despite the efforts of park rangers, additional help is often needed to keep the area safe for wildlife and enjoyable for visitors.
During the cleanup, volunteers collected harmful items such as fishing lines with hooks, broken glass, rusted metal, bottles, and food wrappers—debris that can injure hikers or harm animals. In addition to clearing trails, some volunteers focused on restoring a historic water mill, removing invasive plant species and accumulated trash. Their efforts not only improved the park’s appearance but also contributed to preserving its ecosystem.
Looking Ahead: Continuing the Mission
The cleanup was more than just picking up trash—it was a day of unity and purpose. Volunteers expressed how rewarding it felt to dedicate time to such an important cause. This event marks the beginning of an ongoing mission. The Church of God volunteers plan to continue cleaning parks and natural spaces in the months ahead, striving to make a positive impact on communities and the environment.
