The Parable of the Tree of Life
According to Genesis, if Adam and Eve had eaten from the tree of life, they would have lived forever (Ge 3:22). Even though they could not eat from the tree of life, Jesus teaches us how we can.
Two thousand years ago, Jesus spoke in parables. In fact, this is how God has spoken since the creation of the world (Mt 13:34–35). So, we should not mistake the tree of life for a literal tree.
Jesus Is the Tree of Life
Jesus revealed the reality of the tree of life, saying whoever eats His flesh and drinks His blood has eternal life (Jn 6:53). Therefore, Christ Himself is the tree of life. He gave His flesh and blood for us to eat and drink through the New Covenant Passover (Mt 26:17–19, 26–28). Even though the Passover is the way to eat from the tree of life, Roman Emperor Constantine abolished the Passover in A.D. 325 at the Council of Nicaea. For this reason, Christ promised to return.
“So Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.”
Hebrews 9:28
