About the Soul

The Origin of Our Soul

People have always wondered about the existence of the soul. The Bible explains that our souls (or our spirits) endure beyond our time on Earth—continuing in the eternal, spiritual realm. All people are a combination of the body and the spirit (Gen 2:7). The distinction between the body and spirit are evident when someone dies.

“And the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.”

Ecclesiastes 12:7

This verse conveys that our souls will reunite with God. God dwells in Heaven (Ecc 5:2). So, our souls, upon departing from our bodies, will return to the Heavenly dwelling of God. Contrary to the belief that the soul perishes with the body, this affirms the soul’s eternal existence in the spiritual realm. Jesus Christ’s words further affirm this truth:

“‘Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.’”

Our soul lives on beyond our physical form, highlighting the distinction between the life of the body and the life of the soul. While on Earth, God provides us with the opportunity to prepare for our spiritual future. The death of our body doesn’t signify the death of our soul. Our lives on Earth serve as a chance for us to strive for the salvation of our souls and our lives in the spiritual world.

“For you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”
